Those who did not attend last years conference ask WTF is this? What can I learn from a bunch of comedians? Let me explain the philosophy behind The Audience Conference.

At the intersection of art and commerce lies the audience.

It breaks down like this in it’s simplest form.

Comedy club = Your website
Comedian = Content
Waitress = Affiliates and partners
The Audience = Customers

It’s really that simple. We are simply looking at the offline equivalent of your online world. The powers of engagement that the comedian uses is the same that you need to use in your business. The Audience Conference environment is designed to embrace this. The mixing of artists who truly do deal with audience and the web geeks who have so much to learn from them.

Well here we are years into this thing and we are back to square one. Audience. Why do you think all the big boys are making content plays? Audience. Either building one, serving one, or monetizing one. That’s what all this nonsense comes down to isn’t it? The audience. The living, breathing, organism that is the collective. The audience is a both a reflection, and the original.

People and companies both strive for audiences. On a personal level it means having a group of people who dig you. Size isn’t so important. It’s about communicating ideas. Usually you are in your audience’s audience.

On a business level this is your reason for existence. To build and engage a loyal audience for your product or service. In these days of short attention spans, fierce competition, digital lunacy, the sooner you start looking at your market as your audience the better you are going to be.

This is the the theme of the Audience Conference. Building, Engaging, Monetizing, the audience.

This years Audience Conference is a combination of business speakers and stand-ups. You read that right. Why? Well I can think of no other group of artists who understand audiences on it’s purest level. Both the good and the bad. Our speakers are addressing the same issues from a web perspective. A real and cyber world discussion of audience.

We are pleased to have some very, very sharp comedians performing. Our business speakers are just as good. We will also be announcing a late addition or two. Signal against all the noise.

The show will be August 14th at the world famous Caroline’s on Broadway. It is the day before Affiliate Summit East in NYC. The price is only $129 for a full day of learning and laughter. Smart people, funny people, free food, free beer and wine, 8 hours of nonstop nonsense.

Brian built database-driven web applications and content management systems for many large companies in the 90′s including Intel, J.D. Edwards, Deloitte & Touche and The McGraw-Hill Companies. His 1999 Tech-Engine site was a “skinnable HotJobs” which powered over 200 online career centers including XML.com, Perl.com, O’Reilly & Associates Network, DevShed and Computer User magazine. He has been the art director of three print magazines and was the Chief Technology Officer of Rising Tide Studios where he developed The Venture Reporter Network, which is now a Dow Jones property.

In 2004, Brian Alvey and Jason Calacanis created the publishing company Weblogs, Inc. – home to such category leading blogs as Engadget, Autoblog, Joystiq, TUAW, TV Squad, Cinematical, Download Squad, WOW Insider, Slashfood and Blogging Stocks. AOL acquired Weblogs, Inc. in October 2005. In June 2006, Brian also became the chief architect of Netscape and lead the development team which turned the struggling portal into a thriving social news site.

In November 2006, AOL acquired Blogsmith, the enterprise-grade blog publishing platform Brian built. Today AOL uses Blogsmith to publish more than 50 Weblogs, Inc. blogs, dozens of AOL channel blogs and the leading gossip site, TMZ.

From her site;
Rachel Feinstein grew up outside Washington DC, the daughter of a civil rights lawyer and a blues musician, giving her a keen eye for the absurd and unjust. She developed her hilarious, character driven style by opening for her father’s blues band as a kid and doing impressions of various loud and jarring relatives.

Rachel has made numerous appearances on “Comedy Central” and can also be seen on upcoming episodes of “Comics Unleashed” as well as the “ Just For Laughs” comedy series on TBS.

Driven to comedy by law school, Gold never does the same set twice. Her unique style—raw and participatory, inflected by confessional politics—is a reflection of her unorthodox artistic path: studies at Yale and Northwestern Law, training at Groundlings, plus years soaking up Hollywood and the geek culture of the Net and Silicon Valley. Heather worked the web since it’s earliest days in 1995, influencing her innovative form of comedy which involves the audience whenever possible, drawing them out and threading and connecting ideas and people.
